Go North!
I suspect that you could find really good color by getting on the Parkway at US 421 just after crossing into Watauga County, and going north into Virginia. My mother says that colors are peaking up in Maryland, where the mountains are much lower in elevation. Even though they are far north, the colors are delayed due to the lower elevation. So, if you're thinking of coming up for fall colors now, you might want to consider going north on up to Roanoke and even up to Shenandoah National Park on Skyline Drive (even if that is not in NC!). Enjoy!

We are going to the Highlands area this weekend. Will there still be good color in that area? What would be the best places to view the fall foliage?
ReplyDeleteAfter a few weeks of delay, Im finally headed up to the mountains with a couple of co-workers who have never experienced the high country and the blue ridge parkway. Coming from Greensboro, Im planning on driving 421 to North Wilkesboro, following 268 south to 321. Then take 321 up to blowing rock.. then 221 south to linville.. and then getting on the BRP headed up into Virginia and finally leaving the Parkway at the Mabry Mill area and returning home via NC 8. What should I expect as far as color goes? And is this a good journey to give my co-workers a taste of the Blue Ridge Mountains?
ReplyDeleteI see the weather forecast calls for the possibility of snow in the boone area on Saturday... hopefully clearing by noon. Is it still worthwhile to make a trip in spite of the possibility of clouds and or wet weather?
